In the Company of Rapists

According to the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology atheists still have to face rather daunting stigmas. According to the study majority of believers still regard atheists  as trustworthy as rapists. A comrade at  Think Atheist rightly pointed out “that’s just too ridiculous not to ridicule.” However it does highlight an ongoing bigotry that can be fought in two main ways:

Educate: Blog, make websites, write letters to the editor…use the media to help people learn why this stigma is unwarranted.

Set the Example: Really the slowest but best way to remove a negative stigma on our personalities is to just be a good person. It’s that simple really, this will win the war in the end.

While it may be an uphill struggle if we continue to educate and set the example maybe one day we will be as trustworthy as white collar criminals.

  1. I’m not worried. This means atheists are as trusted as Catholic priests.
